 An electronic signature, also called an e-signature, is a type of signature used to provide legal documents and other types of legal documents with security and authentication. A typical electronic signature will include the person's name, address, date of birth, any initial, password or other security questions, as well as any location or other tags (such as physical or virtual) that may be included with the document. In most cases, an electronic signature does not require the signature of the individual holding the document, as is the case with some types of signatures. Electronic signatures can be used for a variety of different purposes. They can be used as access control measures for sensitive information, stored data, controlled access areas, secured networks and messaging systems, among other purposes. Electronic signatures have become very popular in the business world, particularly in financial transactions, where they are used to record the ownership of a piece of property. An e-signature is digitally signed, so it cannot be faked or altered in any way. It is legally binding, because it is stored on a public database and is recorded and monitored by multiple different sources. Digital signatures can even be placed on documents that do not have any legal bearing whatsoever, such as a press release or letterhead. However, there are several problems that are associated with electronic signatures. Because the signatures cannot be verified or checked for their authenticity, they are prone to being misused by unscrupulous people who wish to illegally obtain otherwise legal documents. For instance, an employee that signs an employee identification card does not have the same assurances as a typical consumer that the card was personally signed by that employee. This makes the card an easy target for fraudsters who sign the card on behalf of the company, obtain access to vital company information or other business information, and commit illegal acts. Digital signatures are not foolproof. An additional problem comes from how the signature appears to be attached to the document. Because an electronic signature can be physically "attached" by a physical object, including a computer keyboard, mouse, or any other stylized device that the user believes contains a signature, the document can appear to be legally binding when the Certificado digital SIIactually isn't there. When a computer user types in a document that purports to be signed by that person (an "authenticate"), the signature that appears next to the key's display often times doesn't look like the person's actual signature at all. Instead, it looks like a simple combination of alphanumeric characters and spaces. Another problem associated with the signatures is that many users are unaware that they are even using electronic signature when they are completing a document. In a multi-user environment, where many employees, customers and guests use a particular program during a given time period, a person may unwittingly provide false information or a wrong version of information when signing a document. If multiple people use the same application program at the same time to sign documents (or if one person signs more than one document), an incorrect, but valid signature will be provided on the resulting document. To prevent this problem from occurring, some companies are turning to "sss," or Simplified Service Signatures, to create a single version of an electronic signature that is recognized by everyone. As e signed documents continue to advance, software developers will continue to develop ways of managing the transmission and matching of signatures. Until then, the basic electronic signature should be sufficient for most purposes. But even with these problems, companies can eliminate much of the risk associated with electronic forms of signing by implementing a multi-user, multi-form signing process.
